About us: Tasks & goals

The Ecological-Botanical Garden is a central scientific facility of the University of Bayreuth with a focus on ecology and environment in research and teaching. It was established in 1978.

Over 16 ha of grounds and 6000 m² of greenhouse space, our garden presents naturally tended vegetation types from all over the world, and beside their variety of plants, shows their ecological relationships and functions, as well as a large diversity of animals. As far as possible, it assumes species protection tasks and offers excellent opportunities for modern ecological field studies.

The Garden is an interregional significant attraction and a centre for education and recreation. Our mission is to strengthen the University of Bayreuth through outstanding research, teaching, and public education.
